Dataw Island Celebration of Veteran Service to benefit Tee It Up for the Troops

Event Details

Dataw Island Veterans Week

In 2023 Dataw Island Club will be celebrating our 18th annual fundraising golf event in recognition of our country’s veterans, the 7th year partnered with the Tee It Up for the Troops organization. Ours is a week-long commemoration which includes a variety of activities and events for all Dataw Island Club members and guests to enjoy, and every year gets better and better!

Saturday, November 4:

  • Stars & Stripes Tennis Tournament benefitting TIUFTT

Sunday, November 5:

  • As the sun rises and from the gatehouse to the clubhouse, volunteers will place over 3,500 American flags along the beautiful streets of Dataw Island.
  • Come midday golfers, from rookies to regulars, can participate in a popular and fun Big Break Challenge on a course creatively designed as a ‘superintendent’s revenge.’
  • The day winds to a close with the loud and rowdy Tip It Up for the Troops social at the club Pub. Here friends and neighbors can enjoy refreshing libations served by our ‘celebrity’ bartenders, raffles, and auctions, and tips are encouraged (arm twisting allowed) and donated to TIUFTT.
  • In addition, a silent auction opens on Sunday and runs for the duration of the week-long celebration.

Monday, November 6:

  • In the wee hours of morning, 3:30 a.m. is the start time of the now famous marathon featuring Dataw’s Director of Golf, Chris Fearn. Club members pledge based on holes, birdies, eagles, or a lump sum donation, and in 2022 Chris played a record setting 254 holes including 65 birdies and 4 eagles raising over $27,000!
  • Also, on Mondays in recent years, Dataw has hosted varying adaptive golf tournaments. This year the Parris Island Adaptive Golf Experience will be partnering with us and this years’ experience will include a skills challenge followed by a 5-hole scramble.
  • After a long day the local Disabled American Veterans Beaufort Chapter treats players and volunteers to an abundant LowCountry boil. Yum!

Tuesday, November 7:

Tuesday is a very busy day beginning with the Tee It Up for the Troops tournament registration, a celebratory ceremony including the national anthem, invocation, veterans march, raising of the flags, and reading of the governor’s proclamation. This is followed by a thrilling ball drop, the tournament, and a cookout with a guest speaker.

Wednesday, November 8:

In the evening, members and guests get to sit back and enjoy a free, hugely entertaining, concert, “Saluting America’s Veterans,” performed by the 50+ member LowCountry Wind Symphony.

Thursday, November 9:

The week caps off with the moving Veterans Breakfast which includes a medley of songs of the various arms of the military sung by the Dataw Singers, presentation of colors by the Beaufort High School ROTC, gifting of a beautiful quilt crated by the Dataw Quilt Club to a special veteran, presentation of the Fallen Soldier table, and more.

For many years Dataw Island Club has lovingly embraced the Tee It Up for the Troops tournaments, and we are profoundly grateful for the incredible volunteer efforts and gracious financial support of our residents and members. We are looking forward to another great Celebration of Veteran Service at Dataw Island in 2023!
